  4. Ok, a heroic teacher story:

In 5th grade I had a teacher named Mr. Villemaire.
He was a big guy, with a deep voice, and glasses.
Often they’d slide down from his eyes and catch on his nose and he’d just peer over at us.
    Sometimes with a look.
    Sometimes with a smile.

He read to us all the time.
I remember him reading THE DARK THIRTY: SOUTHERN TALES OF THE SUPERNATURAL and how spooked I was. But I loved the book. I saved up my money and it was the first book I bought at the Scholastic Book Fair that came that year. I still have that copy too.

    He also loved writing.
He’d post a Norman Rockwell painting up where we could all see it,
and our challenge was the write a story about what was happening in the painting.
Or what happened before or after.
Or something from the point of view of one of the characters.

    I LOVED doing that.
My mom taught at this same school and often she’d tell me that Mr. Villemaire said he really liked one of my stories. Later, when I’d grown up and moved away, she said she saw him, and told him that I was pursuing writing for kids now. She said he smiled and said, “She always had a way with a story.”

I hope that when my book comes out in 2017 and I can go into classrooms, that I can get kids as excited for books and writing as Mr. Villemaire did.

I don’t have a school address (though I work in different schools everyday) but if I win I have a friend with a terrific 4th grade classroom that I know will love all these goodies.

Hope this comment isn’t too long for you!
    Happy Halloween!

I’ve been thinking a lot about heroes lately. I teach the hero’s journey to my high school students, and I’m currently working to develop a new unit to use. I may need to include One for the Murphys. And I got to read an ARC of Fish in a Tree and absolutely love it! I look forward to purchasing a copy for my classroom and to share with other teachers & classes.

One shout out to an extraordinary kid named Cassie. Cassie was in my 6th grade class last year. On Tuesday, I received this email from her:

    Hi Mrs Clark
I dont know if you know this but I have gotten surgery on my back from L4 to T5 I would love to visit you after I am out of the hospital, or you could come visit me I in here to at least friday and the latest would be next monday, thank you so much, also I am on level 5 in the Helen demos children’s hospital I am in the room #503.
    ~Cassie

Last year Cassie would stay in everyday at recess to do her physical therapy exercises. She worked so hard trying to avoid surgery on her spine, but early this fall, she got word that her back had increased to a 66% curvature and she had to have surgery. I went to see her last night. she was sleeping when I entered the room, but when her mom greeted me, she work up and struggled to pull up into a sitting position to give me a hug. Her smile shined right through to the heart of me.

She explained that she is now at 2%. She has a month of being at home with a homeschool tutor and then 5 more months of therapy and healing.

After we talked about how she felt, we began to talk books. She listed several she’d read since last year and many she wants to read in the future. This amazed me. This was a kid who truly struggled with reading last year. She avoided it the first trimester. But, as we found books that she loved and could handle, she slowly began to open up. What a gift she gave me talking books for over a half an hour! This is a kid who has grit!

She works long hours to finish homework that others might do with little thought, she completes lengthy math assignments, even when given the option to do only half, and has persevered in improving her handwriting, making it legible to herself and others. 34. Hi Lynda,

This is a wonderful giveaway. If there was one teacher that really stood out as a mentor for shy little me–it was my 11th grade American Literature english teacher: Mrs. O’Reilly. She assigned weekly writing assignments and was a tough grader. Two points off for every spelling error, two points off for every grammar usage error. I was the only kid in the class that got an A that didn’t have a computer with spell check. (Back then, there was only one kid that had parents who could afford a personal computer at home.) But as much as all the other kids strongly disliked the workload and the standards to which she held them to, I thrived. Really truly for the first time began to see how much I loved writing.

  39. I am reposting this on Facebook in the hopes that I win the contest for my students. I teach a diverse group–those economically disadvantaged (who would love to have a home w/ the Murphy’s), children of military members, students from other countries, and those who are born and raised Marylander’s. These students are MY heroes, as they face the challenges presented them each day in school and out as they attempt to adapt to difficulties that 13 and 14 year old children should not have to face.
    Thank you!!
