Authors Love Teachers Giveaway, 2019
HELLO, HEROIC TEACHERS AND LIBRARIANS!
It’s THAT time again. Valentine’s Day – when we all take a moment to celebrate those we love. So, we authors want you — teachers and librarians — to know that we adore you for all you do for kids every day. We appreciate you. We KNOW that you are not celebrated the way that you ought to be. For you, there should be parades 
and fireworks and a national holiday.
Many know that my second novel, Fish in a Tree, is a love letter to wonderful teachers everywhere. As I think of a few teachers, in particular, I really wonder where I’d be had I not crossed paths with them. Many have heard about Constantine Christy, my sixth grade teacher, who was the inspiration for Mr. Daniels in Fish. But, few know the story of Mr. Berard.
Mr. Berard was my seventh grade social studies teacher. He clearly loved his job and “his kids”. Just as with Mr. Christy, it became important to me to impress him so when he assigned a big project in late fall, I decided I would blow his mind by building a colonial village.
In the basement of our apartment, I found a piece of plywood and began there. By the time my mom came home from work, I was mixing plaster of Paris with dirt on our dining room table. (Yeah, I know…) I made buildings out of inside-out food boxes and crayons. I used macaroni and cotton balls and legos and anything else I could find. In my own mind, it remains Smithsonian-worthy.
The heft of it made it hard to carry so, by the time I got to class, I dropped it on a desk, relieved to put it down. The noise got the attention of two unkind girls.
“What is this?” one asked.
“It’s my project!” I smiled, feeling a bit taller than usual.
“That’s not what we were supposed to do…” she responded with disgust. And then laughter. The kind of laughter that makes you shrink inside. And as I looked up, I noticed no other project in the room looked like mine. Not even close.
By the time Mr. Berard stood at my side, I stared at my shoes, my ears filled with the girls’ snickering.
I messed up. I couldn’t believe it. I had blown it. Again. What was wrong with me? How come I had to be the person I was?
Mr. Berard was quiet while the girls told him how wrong I was. I waited forever for him to speak. And when he finally did, he said, “Well…you didn’t follow the directions, so…”
I wanted to disappear.
“…I’m going to have to give you an A minus…”
The girls argued but he told them to go. My head rose slowly so I could look at his face to see if he was telling the truth. And we locked eyes. His smile was sad. I don’t even think I said thank you. I couldn’t say anything.
If he had followed a rubric as we use now, I would have failed. Maybe I deserved that. But he would have undone everything that Mr. Christy had accomplished the year before. Instead, he chose to see the child before the student. Because of this, I looked at him with gratitude in the months that followed and the student worked very hard for him. And…was always careful to read the directions.

Wow, what an amazing opportunity! My class and I have learned a lot of valuable lessons through reading a few of these books. Wonder is our favorite book so far, it really gave everyone in my class the opportunity to perceive life in a different way. I would love to create more shared experiences with my students and getting a hold of these amazing books would definitely help me do that!

I have used Fish in a Tree as my first read aloud of the school year, for the past two years. That book never leaves our hearts! We still use scenes of it when we discuss difficult times or a student needs an encouragement. I’m so grateful for a clear visual to help my students develop that growth mindset model! Thank you for that!

I am overwhelmed by the generosity of all of the authors! One of my greatest joys in teaching is reading aloud to my classes. Books allow students to grapple with difficult issues in the safety of their pages. It really is amazing!

it’s Amazing how easy it is to inspire to kids to read and love to read just by offering them books they feel connected to and giving them the opportunity to talk about them. There is not trick or special program. This is an amazingly diverse range of books. What a generous offer!!

My wonderful 4th grade teacher, Mrs. Yoxall, is the reason I became a teacher. She read aloud to us everyday and it was magical! I taught her grandson, so when she walked into my classroom for the first time for Grandparent’s Day several years ago, it was so surreal and emotional.

This is so amazing for teachers and librarians! My students take so much pride in our classroom library, but with so many wonderful titles out there I feel like I can never keep up! But we will continue to celebrate books every day, even if that means sometimes we have to wait for the ones we really want!

This is incredibly generous! As a reading teacher, I am constantly trying to find the right books for all of my students. So many of the books on this list are books that my students have completely devoured, and seeing them reminds me of how happy they were when they told me about the book they just couldn’t put down!

if there is a chance that only 1 student takes away the love of reading as much as I do, that would make my day, but here I think that there will be many more as the students are always asking,, “can we get our books now”. When you have JK-8 students that want to read books, keeping the most popular ones on the shelves is impossible. Thank you for the chance

I can’t thank you & the #kidlit community enough for all you do for teachers & students. The connections & inspiration are endless.
This year, my favorite bookish moment has been giving a hand knitted hat (made by author Amanda Rawson Hill) to one of my 5th graders. My student found her book The Three Rules of Everyday Magic at just the right time & connected so much with the MC Kate. I told Amanda about my student’s connection and love for her book, and she knitted her a hat in her favorite color (purple). Tears of joy from my student when I delivered it to her!
So grateful to this #kidlit community. ❤️

What an incredible idea! I just saw a post that said, “There is no app that can replace a lap”. My mom and grandmother instilled a love of reading in me! My fondest memories are sitting in their laps and reading!!

This is a wonderful collection of books! Fish in a Tree is one of my most recommended books for teachers as well as Wishtree, The One and Only Ivan, and The Book Whisperer. I’m so honored to be an elementary librarian who gets to share the wonderful love of reading to my students! I love to meet non-readers or students who say “I don’t like reading”. That’s just a fun challenge to find the right kinds of books to grab their interest! There’s always something that they will enjoy reading 😀! Sharing this giveaway on Twitter too!

Well, I’m tearing up. I know we’re down in the trenches, but amazing books like all of these sure do make my job easier. This is my 3rd year and I finally feel like I’m creating a book community in my classroom and it is beautiful to see. As a confirmed Book Nerd I am delighted that my class shares my delight in reading. Whenever I bring a new book into the class they clamour to read it. Many thanks to the authors and illustrators for creating books, portals to near and faraway lands that my students explore on a daily basis. I love reading these books along with my students. I’m always looking for “that right book”’that will be a perfect match for “that student.” Last year I had a student read a chapter book and when she finished she said she was happy and sad. She was happy she finished the book and liked how the story ended. Yet, she was sad because she didn’t want it to be over – she wanted to keep being in the character’s life. The student found a forever friend in the book. WIN!! @MsDGregg

My students have read over 600 books this year! Most of my students hated reading at the beginning of the year because it’s dififuclt for them. Giving them choice in what they read has made all the difference. I couldn’t imagine their faces if we won these books!

This is an amazing, superb list of books! Many I have book talked to my students. Right now, I set up a booktique in the library for the kids to use in tandem with coming to school on time. It’s a new concept we’re hoping will work. For every 20 days the kids come to school on time they earn a “bee buck”. When they earn the buck, they come to the library and buy a book they can take home forever. The kids are so excited to be able to “buy” a book from the library to keep, not just to borrow. This just started and I’m hoping it will be a success.

When I rolled out our chapter of a Project Lit Community book club this year, I had a member, soon to become an officer, who told me that she’s been begging for a book club since elementary school, with no takers. She wanted a space where books were important, where she could share what she loved. She’s planned that on March 1, we’re going to our elementary kindergarten and first grade classrooms, to read to the students, because she wants to spark that love of reading for them, too. We want to give books to each K-1 student, and this giveaway might help us make that happen. Bless you, regardless, for showing book love to teachers. And I loved Fish in a Tree, by the way!

I bet all educators have a story about a teacher who changed their lives, like Mr. Berard and Mr. Christy changed yours. Here’s mine. I started a new school when I was in 2nd grade, in 1976, and was extremely nervous and anxious. I was an advanced reader, and my mother had told me I should go to the school library and ask for the book Miss Hickory. So I got up all my courage and approached the librarian, Mrs. Barnes. She took one look at the timid little person in front of her, and started to say, “Oh dear, I think that book is much too challenging for you.” But then she paused, and said, “Are you the new girl?” (Apparently my reading assessment scores preceded me!) When I confirmed her guess, she immediately showed me the book, and several others besides, and we were fast friends for the rest of her life. And I am now an elementary school librarian myself!

When I look through this list of books, I don’t see titles, I see students, students I can think of who need each story. There are students I’ve had that needed Fish in a Tree and students that I’ve had that needed Wishtree, and there is an older student I mentor who right now needs Hey Kiddo. These stories help our students feel less alone, and help us know have something to say when we don’t know what to say. “There is a book I think you should read.” is a line that offer students so much more than you might ever know. So thank You authors for helping us teachers reach more students.

Books and reading are why I became a teacher (and now a Media Specialist). Every time I get to see a student smile because of a character he/she can relate to or have an amazing discussion about a book that leads to another being placed in a students’ hands I am rewarded and reinvigorated by what I do. Wow!! What an amazing gift to teachers and their students, Lynda! I love to hear all the discussion of books in my classroom. I started a Parent/child Book Club last year and it has been a great success. I also read the first chapter of books on Fridays, and sometimes other days, to create the excitement about reading in my class. My students would definitely be in awe if a box filled with these books were to arrive for our class.

Especially my students, who are dealing with military deployments, home displacement following recent hurricanes, poverty, and all the emotional turmoil that goes with it. Our library went through an attempted book banning this year that included a children’s book. We were not very hopeful of the outcome until we saw the amount of community support, especially from middle and high schoolers and their teachers. Books bring the community together in a special way. Maine is once again facing a book banning through the education system, and Mainers are once again, pushing back. 💗

This. Is. Incredible. Every month my students are able to fill their library with a free book donated by my friends and family- it’s sometimes the only books they have at home. Thankfully I have a wonderful co-teacher that sparks a love for reading with kiddos. I am lucky to have someone who can recommend a good book to myself or a student. Many titles are on this list! It would be like Christmas to get all of these great titles to add to our classroom library.

This is wonderful! Each year, I choose books from Kansas’ William Allen White nominees to read to my library classes. Last year, I read Fish in a Tree to all of my 4th graders and they overwhelmingly chose it when it came time to vote for their favorite. They were so happy when they learned that the rest of Kansas agreed with us!

Wow!!! This is such an amazing gesture! As I sit at home with a sick 3 year old, missing my 5th graders, especially on Valentine’s Day! I have so many of these books in my online cart waiting to buy them slowly because I don’t have $ or a school budget to buy them all at once! These books would boost my readers’s enthusiasm for reading and my classroom library will be that much more diverse and rich in literature. Thank you for the post! Some days, teaching young minds feels a little like that scene in Jurassic World where the guy is holding his arms out and trying to tame the raptors in front of him. Most days, though, it’s the connections we, as educators, make with our students while sharing with them our passions for things like language and literature that make us get up every morning ready to do it all again.

This is incredible! I am very active in reading and supporting the California Young Reader Medal, and I’ve spotted several past and current nominees. Selfishly, I want this because, after years of non-stop YA, I’ve recently really jumped in to reading middle-grade books and loving them! I feel like the true life lessons are even more prevalent in those books than in others, and even as an adult, I take away so much from these younger reads. But professionally, as a district librarian, I can find many different homes for these books to make sure our students keep learning, too. Thank you again for this incredible gift!

I didn’t discover the love of reading until I became a fifth-grade teacher. I only started reading to get familiar with middle-grade lit. And guess what. I fell in LOVE! (Perfect for Valentines Day right?!)

I’m not sure why this memory stands out in my mind, but I distinctly remember my 5th grade teacher, Mr. Schmidt, reading “The Hobbit” to our class for the last 20 minutes of the day while we quietly listened or doodled. He had a way of bringing the words to life for us and keeping us hungry for more. Many of us tried to check out or buy the book just so we could read ahead! I haven’t recalled that memory in decades! WOW. Reading your story, I was in tears. I recently listened to the audiobook of Fish in a Tree, and I cleaned my whole house because I couldn’t turn it off until I heard the whole story. I cried plenty through that story too! As I scrolled through the list of books in this giveaway, I lost it. Many people ask me when I decided to become a teacher. My response has always been “since first grade.” It seems a little far fetched that a first grader knew the life path that she wanted to embark on, but has been a dream that I have been able to achieve and live every day. Now, the reasoning behind this has become more evident as I teach children that come from struggling homes. I, myself, was a child of a broken home and it wasn’t anything I was aware of as a child. My favorite part about life was school. I loved being able to be with other kids who were my age and being able to find success in my classroom at whatever age. My kindergarten and first-grade teachers really fed this love and showed me the love that I was needing at that time. I am ever grateful for them and their ability to see the child that I was and give me every opportunity to support me in my young endeavors. As I grew older, my third-grade teacher also gave me her attention and let me shine as in her class. I currently teach middle school and applaud everyone I have met who teaches and works with young children. You have changed my life forever, and I am ever grateful.
It is exciting to see that you are now doing the same to reach teachers and show them the love and appreciation that they deserve. THANK YOU!

My favorite thing about the library is getting to watch the kids’ faces when they are really into a read aloud, especially when there’s a suprising plot twist, or a cool illustration, or an interesting fact that makes them think. My favourite memory is getting The Crossover into the hands of a reader who sometime had trouble finding the right book. We had a fire drill that day and he asked me if he could bring the book outside with him to read. The right book is magic for a reader!

Lynda I loved your story about Mr. Berard. Unfortunately, I never had a Mr. Berard in my life. As a student with ADHD in the 1980’s I was a very misunderstood child. My teachers spent their day yelling at me so I went home a sad little girl everyday. As a result I knew I wanted to be a teacher so I could change this. It is my personal goal to be a hero for my students every day by loving them regardless of the challenges they bring with them. I want them to know that they are loved by someone in our building. I would love to share these books with my kiddos. I teach 5th grade, and with all the awkwardness and love, picture books give us great things to help anchor our conversations. The chapter books help students travel, when they’re stuck in our town! They often find hope and believe in themselves so much more with great connections to literature. I know this is true for mostly all students, but as a third year teachers, my resources are extremely limited. The signed copies would help them believe themselves as writers too. Books and people promoting books help empower our future leaders and help create positive change.

Reading is such a gift! I love those times when I completely lose myself in a story. The characters coming to life and walking with me throughout my day while I can’t wait to get back to their world even if it is only for a few minutes. Ending a good book is so bittersweet- having to say goodbye to newly made friends but also so satisfying seeing them through the story they wanted to tell you and the lessons they needed to share.

Just last week I decided that I am really good at encouraging reading picture books aloud at school, but not with my now 12 yo at home, even though I know it’s still great for older kids, so…we’ve been having a ball picking a picture book each night and reading together! Let me tell you that I was a student that was turned off of reading in high school, specifically after 9th grade. My ninth grade ELA teacher was Mrs. Smith. She was in her 20s and was not taken seriously by the other teachers at my school. But WOW! Did her choice of books make an impact on me! Sure, she taught what she “had to” teach, but then she added on some controversial titles which really opened our eyes and hearts: Black Like Me, The Chosen, and Night were 3 of the main ones that I still have in my house. It’s amazing what an influential teacher can make you want to keep. After 9th grade, it was no choice and very “cookie-cutter.” We were not able to choose our summer reading…we got one book. Cliff Notes were my best friend. And that continued throughout college and my adult life. I would have never thought that I (an 8-year-old child that got in trouble for reading in the middle of the night on a school night by a nightlight after a day at the book store or library picking out a new book) would despise reading so much.
That is when a volunteer at my current school I work at comes into play. He told me about The Book Whisperer by Donalyn Miller. I bought the book, and I READ THE BOOK. Now, I was inspired to read more! And I was inspired to inspire my kids! I began reading more for me. I read teacher books like Kids Deserve It, Teach Like a Pirate, Sparks in the Dark, Ditch That Textbook, Amplify, etc. I read self-help books like The Miracle Morning, Girl, Wash Your Face, Seven, and am in the middle of High Performance Habits and Atomic Habits. I am also immersing myself in more children’s books (I teach 2nd grade, but had my comfort zone). I reorganized my classroom library and have added so many more titles to it. I have read some of the books on this list of giveaways and others are in my wishlist on Amazon. I am so into reading and passing on the love of reading that I have applied to go back to school to get my Masters and Librarian Certification! I couldn’t be more into reading than I am now. I am actually looking forward to Spring Break in Mexico so that I can wake up early and watch the sunrise while I read. As a teacher some of my favorite moments with my students are the moments when I see them fall in love with a book; when they see themselves in a story, when they laugh out loud while reading silently (or listening to an audiobook) because they just can’t help themselves, and when they beg for one more chapter… “please, just one more!” at read aloud. Every kid deserves to have the chance to get lost in a good book.

The month of February is Library Lovers month and this one has been special. I work with PreK-5th and also 6-8th so it is a fascinating journey to see the joy of learning progress until they leave for high school. This week we initiated our first 1school1read project. Middle school families are reading Love That Dog by Sharon Creech.
A sixth grade boy walks to my library desk after one night reading, hands me a book and says “I hope this is as good as the other one”. I flip it over and realize he has put his faith in Sharon Creech’s Hate That Cat! My heart is full and know that I have only the second best job to the authors of these life changing books.

As the daughter of a librarian, my daughter was destined (or cursed?) to love books and she knows I have a hard time saying no to her requests. Yesterday she brought one of Todd Parr’s books to me, pointed at a picture of another book on the back and said, “I have an idea. You can get me this book!” Love that kid 😊 This kind of book love is what I hope to foster in all of my students. Thanks for sharing your book love every year, Lynda!

The best part of my job is connecting with kids everyday about books. I love being able to witness the transition that kids make who struggle early on and then find a book that they identify with. They turn into life long readers who can’t put a book/series down. Then encouraging them to write to the author and when they get letters back, I cry everytime along with them. So many beautiful books! I know many students and teachers who would love them. Our budget is frozen and we haven’t been able to buy books for classroom libraries since September. 😢 Sharing these books with them would be amazing!
Side note – one of my book club’s first reads this year was One for the Murphy’s. I watched those kiddos fall in love with reading because of that book so THANK YOU! Oh my goodness. This is incredible. THANK YOU so much for thinking of us teachers and sharing so many books! This is a tough time of year when test scores are coming back to check mid-year progress and some of the kids that you pour the most effort into, just don’t make the score… it is frustrating. I’m doing my best to remind myself that test scores are pretty much pointless. Focusing on them is a formality I have to do… but it’s so hard when I want them to do well so bad!
I liked when you made the comment about your teacher seeing the child first. That is such a GOOD reminder for me right now. They are still children and most of them really don’t understand or care about their test scores! And they definitely DO NOT paint the entire picture of what they can do.

Gotta love teacher love ❤️. I love hearing those stories of the Mr. Berard’s and Mr. Christy’s. Simple actions that follow the rules of kindness over correctness are always the ones that stick to our ribs and give us something to savor. Those stories are so important; the other day I was at the grocery store and say a 20 something man greet and hug a surprised and pleased middle aged woman. Circling the fruit samples, I surmised that she was his high school teacher. He introduced her to his wife as, “the only teacher in my whole life who ever gave me an A in her class.” They made small talk and discussed how he left st contact with his crowd of friends from high school and how maybe that was a good idea. She smiled and agreed and asked him to say hi to his brother. Then she leaned in and patted him on the back and loudly whispered. By the way, I gave you nothing. That A was earned, not given and don’t you forget it! His smile radiated as she turned and walked away. Evsdropping still, stuck and silent, fake searching for juice boxes, I felt a tear and a rush of well being. How privileged I felt to witness that. I aspire to one day, have a student greet me with the same warmth and affection. Too good not to share, even if the story was not mine to tell. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

KidLit Rocks! Partnering with our author mentor and all the authors who have interacted with us on Twitter this year has made such a huge impact on my students. We can’t thank you enough for all you do and your amazing donations to our classrooms. Today we hosted our Love of Reading Cafe day. We set up the whole room while the kids were at specials. On each table was a collection of books to browse, a card for them to write down a book recommendation for their classmates, a new bookmark, a TBR list for them to fill up, and a treat to nibble on. We give students 5-7 minutes with each book collection, then rotate them around the table groups. I co-teach, so we had 57 kids falling in love with new books today. My favorite comments were, “I can’t wait to taste this book” and “You mean to tell me this book has been in our library all year!” One of our book box collections was filled with authors that will be visiting for the Tucson Festival of Books in March. Every year I have a crew of kids who join me over the weekend to meet and mingle with their favorite authors. To us, you are our rockstars! Scrolling through this list of books brings me so much joy. Almost as much joy as when one one of my most hesitant readers asked me if we could extend our daily reading from 10 minutes to 20. When I asked why his attitude towards reading changed so dramatically this year, he explained that he’d never had completely free choice over what he read. I’m 5 months, he’s read over 50 graphic novels from my classroom alone, and has now independently selected a chapter book (Armstrong & Charlie) to read with his best friend every day. They read aloud to each other and discuss each chapter of the book together. All because they want to and find joy in it. Reading and the sharing of books has probably been the single greatest relationship builder between me and my students. The story above is only 1 of 50 I could have told from this year. Thank you (and all the authors out there!) for providing that opportunity.

Especially, “When Grandma Gives You a Lemon Tree”, and that time “Grandma Gatewood Hikes the Appalachian Trail”. Books can be such “Real Friends”: think of “Bob”, “Abraham Lincoln”, and “Jasmine ToGuchi, Flamingo Keeper. ” Then, there are times when you need to go ‘Beyond the Bright Sea”, or on “The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise”, where “Sometimes You Fly”! Saying “Goodbye, Mr. Spaulding”, “You are the Everything” , the “Big Top Burning” when “The Prophet Calls.” “The Rat Prince” on a “Lifeboat” was quite “The Looney Experiment” a “Hundred Percent”. “A Place for Turtles” “Just Under the Clouds”, could be “The Next Great Paulie Fink”. Shall I tell you “The Truth About Twinkie Pie”, perhaps “Azalea Unschooled”, or would you rather know “The Way To Be”? I think I’m reaching a “Rough Patch” with the “Problim Children” but that’s nothing compared to the “Trials of Apollo”. BOOKS are all the inspiration we all need. I am so moved when my students and I share a love of the same book. The moments that bond us, are embarrassingly, the many times, I have teared up, as I read a moving read aloud stories: Tiger Rising, Wonder, Island of the Blue Dolphin, Saavy, Esmerelda Rising, The One and Only Ivan… On more than one occasion, a particularly attentive student has been on stand by to take over for me when I can’t finish a tear worthy passage. They see it coming. And also the times that their successful growth as readers makes me so proud of them that my voice chokes up again and I make a confusing fool of myself as I congratulate them. Students at my school get a nod from the principal when they pass their grade level reading expectation. I am SO proud to let them know, that the principal has something for them when they make the cut. These are the books that inspire and move them to KEEP Reading for pleasure, for love, for fun. These are the books that inspire me to teach and I really keep wishing to write.

This is an amazing selection of books. I’d LOVE to be able to share them with “my” kids. My reason for teaching is my 5th and 6th grade homeroom teachers. They helped me see the good in teachers and I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today. I only hope that I can be that to at least one of “my” kids.

This makes my book loving heart so happy! I had a group of fourth graders in my library this week who WILLINGLY came in on their lunch to get extra practice in for the Battle of the Books competition in a few weeks. It made me ready eyed just listening to them converse I’ve the books and defend their answers as they decided which book was right. I have only been teaching for seven years, but each year I find more joy in sharing awesome books. I have always thought of myself as more of a math teacher, but teaching 3rd grade means I get the privilege of doing it all! For this, I am so glad! Even if one day I were to change grades, I know I would incorporate good literature daily! It’s so uplifting to know that teachers have the support of folks who are helping shape the dreams and creativity of our students. I, personally, did not like reading for pleasure until I was a senior in high school! How many years I missed out! Wow! Such a generous offer! I feel lucky to be a primary teacher, because I get to share books and stories with children everyday. Each year a new batch of students start the year restless and wriggling, but somewhere along the path to June, the light in their eyes begins to twinkle with Book Love. That look, for me, is one of the best parts of teaching. That, and having them quote back story lines in the same character voice I use. (Oh, and having a first year Law student tell me that she still hears my voice(s) reading The Hobbit when she was in my Grade 4 class!)

These are the most wonderful books! Thanks so much for the respect and acknowledgement you give to teachers. Teachers come to work each day and give so much because we know the impact we have on children’s lives. I teach special education, and this week two parents cried, and made me cry, at IEP meetings. The tears were tears of thankfulness for helping their children achieve success and start to enjoy coming to school again. Listening to these parents was a reminder of why I get up each day and go to school. Thank you for recognizing all we do and all we give of ourselves to help our students learn and be successful. If I had won this as a child, I would have brought all of the books into the reading nest I had created in my closet and hunkered down with my snack size snickers bars and a glass of milk while I perused each and every one, trying to decide what to read first. First of all, THANK YOU LYNDA AND AUTHORS for always being champions of teachers, of education, of readers, and of story!!! So grateful for all that you do.
Second, I teach nearly 300 7th graders at a high-needs Title 1 school. I have MANY reluctant and self-proclaimed non-readers. In first hour yesterday, two such students were reading for their Lit Circle groups. (Dear Martin and Ghost Boys, to be precise.) I was meeting with one group, and Student 1 says, “Ms. Lauer, what if I finish this book?” I said, “What if you do?” She responded, “Well, it would be the first book I have finished then.” I said, “And wouldn’t you be proud of yourself! Besides, I think you like this book anyway.” She said coyly, “Maybe.” I reminded her that she can take it home for the weekend to catch up a little bit, and she said, “But I have a basketball tournament again this weekend!”
And from across the room…reluctant reading student #2 shouts, “Bring it with you to the tournament! We have time between games and we could read. That’s what I’mma do!” And just like that…..readers are born.
It’s books like the ones in this Giveaway that kids love, treasure, relate to, see themselves in, and ultimately transform them. Students deserve books like these in classroom libraries.

YOU GUYS! UPDATE!
These two readers DID come in after 7th hour to get their books to take home. When they came in, I told them how proud of them I am for finding a way to make room in their lives for reading. They said, “We kinda told our whole team to bring a book this weekend so we can all read together between games.” I ALMOST DIED. I may have squealed, and they said, “You so extra Ms. Lauer!” but they also GRINNED. My heart is exploding–they’re getting it!!

A lot of my students are what I would call “reluctant readers”. Two months into my fourth year of teaching, I looked around the room at students that were supposed to be reading independently. One student’s book was upside down, I noticed a few students not making any progress in their book, staying at the same page/chapter as the last time I checked in on them and saw several others just looking around the room, clearly not interested in reading their book. Dedicating the first 10 minutes of class to silent reading, this frustrated me! I reached out to my LMC director to ask for a book suggestion where I could capture all of my student’s attention… A book where my students could connect with the story, become dedicated to the characters, and essentially… understand the art of reading for enjoyment. I wanted my students to feel the emotion and love that I felt when I read my favorite book for the first time. My librarian suggested the novel _One for the Murphys_ by Lynda Mullaly Hunt, a book that I hadn’t read at the time. The next day, I interrupted independent reading and told my students that we were going to try something new– a class read aloud. We started that day and we couldn’t put the book down. I was able to watch as even some of my most reluctant readers discovered a love for a book– they felt the same feeling that I had when I was in middle school and read _P.S. Longer Letter Later_ by Paula Danziger and Ann M. Martin for the first time. It was honestly magical!! I haven’t stopped reading aloud to my classes since! This year was the fourth year I’ve read _One for the Murphys_ with my students! Every day, students ask if we can read “just one more chapter!” It makes me love what I do (even more than I already did before)!

Do you know wht this list translates to? That moment…in this case 100 moments, at least,…when you talk to a student and get to know her and you pull a book and explain why it’s perfect forher . You give the student just enough of what is about…until her eyebrows raise and she starts to smile and take it. Or she makes the “I don’t know…” face, but reluctantly gives in and takes it. And you wait. Sometimes awhile. You wait for the magic trapped in the pages to spill on her like a jar of glitter. And then she returns it. Sometimes a student is beaming and overflowing about the story. And even though those moments make my face hurt from smiling about that excitment, the bigger moment — the one I live for –is the student who comes back quietly. Has little to say and hands back the book with out fuss, playing it cool. And when the student doesn’t think any one else can hear says, “Do you have any other books…” trying not to show any real intetest, but like someone who just downed a frothy chocolate milk and unknowingly wears a milk mustache, the magic of that book is all over her. I pull several other choices, and by period’s end one has left the room. And its absence is the biggest thank you note you’ll ever get. And that moment is the reason you teach. And this list is a huge pile of magic book glitter waiting to be spilled.

What a generous gift you will be giving to so many readers! When I saw this on Twitter the other day (@MaryJCook1) I was so excited, not just because I want to read these books (I’m an elementary school Library Supervisor) but also because I can see the faces of so many of my students (650) who would love them as well. It also gave me an idea. On Valentines Day, I was able to give free books away to roughly 40 kiddos in my school who may have challenging situations at home. They were so excited to pick out books they could keep forever! I heard stories from teachers about how when some students found out they were chosen to get free books, they jumped up and down in happiness! Others, who after they had chosen their books, couldn’t put them down that afternoon. Thank you for reminding me of the huge impact this gesture could have on some of my darling students. Your idea gave me one of the happiest Valentines Days I can ever remember. 🙂

Our 4th grade class just finished Fish in a Tree the day before Valentine’s Day- it was perfect. This class had no interest in read alouds in August. Most thought they were boring. Well Wednesday while we read about Albert standing up for his friends- the entire class erupted in applause. A standing ovation at the end as well. I had tears watching this book help transform a classroom. I even had parents email me asking about the book because their children couldn’t stop talking about it.

“All she did was give us a book.” I read that in “October Sky” by Homer Hickman Jr. The words are so true and why surrounding ourselves w/ books matters so much. I’m currently doing an independent study w/ a Native American student who has been deprived of so much and needs the love books by NA writers offer, so that’s how we’re framing her course. She’s also writing her memoir, her story. Of course this would not be possible if not for books and the generosity of creators who bring stories to life and who feed our imaginations w/ possibility for ours and our students’ lives. What a terrific list of books! Thanks for this opportunity. I want share with you something that happened earlier this week at my library. I am the media specialist at a 4-5th grade building. I had students write on paper hearts what they love about their library, so I could decorate the library for Valentine’s Day. A fourth grader wrote this on her heart: “This library is a place where I let out my feelings into my book. It takes me to a whole other place . When I really like a book it’s like I’m really there.” (This is exactly what she wrote, however I did correct her spelling errors)! The books you are offering in this contest would definitely help all my students travel to a “whole other place.” Thanks for this opportunity, and thank you authors for your inspiring stories. Libraries save lives and inspire readers and I can fondly remember my elementary school librarian who taught us about the art of storytelling and allowed me to learn how to storytell “Mufaro’d Beautiful Daughters”. It was such a treat to share stories! After 12 years in the classroom I moved into the school library and have found the most amazing new home. Books like the ones in this amazing giveaway, give kids a chance to escape to other worlds. Some kids end up finding characters they connect with and problems similar to their own. While other kids get exposure to lives very different than what they experience. Regardless, we get to meet them in these worlds and coach them along their own journey-reminding them they too have the courage and tenacity it takes to carry on. This list! Wow, this list. I kept scrolling and scrolling and scrolling, eyes getting wider and wider at all of the amazing titles being offered. The things I could DO with these books! The kids I could share them with! The conversations we could have! *contented sigh* Goosebumps barely begins to describe how the potential and the powerful scope of this giveaway make me feel.

I teach 8th grade English/language arts, and we begin each bl0cked class with sustained silent reading for 15 minutes. We have a rich reading culture in our school. One of my favorite things to do is recommend great books to my students. The best thing at the end of each year is when students tell me it’s the first time they’ve ever read/finished a book on their own, and they actually enjoy reading again. I would really appreciate some new books for my classroom library. My students deserve great choices, and I love providing the time for them to read what they choose.

I did not know there was a sequel to Lady Pancake and Sir French Toast and can’t wait to check out Mission:Defrostable! I think that any teacher would be lucky to have this. Teachers and librarians are really the facilitators and students teach US. In this day and age, it is hard to remain joyful and enthusiastic day in and day out in teaching! This offer is incredible with a wide range of topics and age ranges! I have had one of my toughest years with only two students that I have considered resigning. Then when I am low low, a student will come up with a hug, a smile, needing help that only I can help with, a colleague will say “wow, great job”, administrator says “Thank you for doing this again tomorrow”. It helps! I know it is worth it even when those “in power” view my profession differently. Thank you for the chance to win! That is exciting in itself!!!

What a beautiful way to show your appreciation for teachers. We certainly think of the authors who write for our kids (and us) as rock stars. Thank you for writing the stories that help us strengthen relationships with and among our students and nurture our classroom communities. There is nothing quite like the power of books to connect us. This year student voice has been my go to for planning and decision making in our school I-Zone at Portage View. Student input into book selection is very important to our teachers and therefore student requests are honoured whenever possible. Students are encouraged to review books they have read and these reviews are shared with others through our search engine. So many of the books included in this giveaway are student favourites.

It’s been a rough year, since my students aren’t coming to library. I’m doing whatever I can to help them access books, but I miss sharing stories in person. However, I have started doing a Zoom bedtime story once a week. The first time I did it, one of my kindergarteners nodded off halfway through. It was too sweet!
