#AuthorsLoveTeachers (AND Librarians, of course!) Giveaway, 2020
Well, another Valentine’s Day has rolled around. I have visited many schools so far this year and I am continually astounded by the teachers and librarians who I meet who are caring for the minds and hearts and souls of “their kids.”
I have met teachers who stay after school, work with kids at lunch, and create alternative curricula for children who need it. I see evidence of spectacular lesson and unit planning and rooms decorated to be welcoming places for children. I have met educators who are playing basketball with kids to connect, who greet each student with a smile every morning, and take the time to check in with kids as young people rather than just students.
I know countless librarians and educators who take the time to organize book groups with young readers and discuss real world issues that kids are wondering about or grappling with. I have even met a principal who does laundry for students who would otherwise come to school dirty.
These people are teaching the curriculum but oh, they accomplish SO much more. They save children. They change perceptions. They give kids information and tools to improve their own lives. You know, sometimes it’s a matter of introducing kids to a side of life they simply didn’t know existed. Or seeing themselves in a way they didn’t think was possible.
Like Carley Connors in my first book, ONE FOR THE MURPHYS, I am not a crier but seeing these things happen does undo me sometimes. I am so, so grateful that there is an army of educators out there championing children.
In my latest novel, SHOUTING AT THE RAIN, there is a strong theme of Strong Shoulders (the title of this blog as well). Teachers, librarians, and all others who work with kids each day and buoy them embody this idea.
SO, we authors and illustrators would like to THANK YOU for everything that you do. Every day. YOU are heroes.

I love sharing great books with the students at my five elementary schools. I was picturing the students who would love the books as I scrolled this amazing list. I am a new teacher librarian and see small, library budgets first hand. Thank you to these talented authors and illustrators for their generosity!

I teach about 75 5th graders at a Title I school in Amarillo, TX. We spent much of the fall reading aloud “Fish in a Tree”. Quite a few students are differently abled learners, and Ally’s story definitely helped promote perseverance, grit, friendship, bully awareness, and tolerance. I enjoyed receiving illustrated scenes from the book as gifts, and I especially enjoy it when the kids make text connections back to the book and characters. This is one story none of us will soon forget!
I’m new to teaching reading and look forward to sharing many more wonderful novels with rich characters with my students. In fact, my bday is on 2/20 and this would be an incredible treat to receive as a present to share with my kiddos.

Oh my goodness as I scrolled through the books I was getting more and more excited! I am teaching 4th grade fully online this year and my biggest challenge is getting books into my students’ hands! I miss in personreading time where I could help them discover amazing books and winning any of these would get distributed to students in their monthly pickup!

I absolutely get giddy when my kiddos bring me the books currently being read to share something they’ve noticed… Usually a beautifully worded part or something pertaining to a recent discussion; vocabulary, symbolism, literary reference, etc! @StortzTara

I love sharing books with students, and this year I shared The Bad Guys with the 3rd graders I work with. I bought the 10th book and brought it to school for one of my students to read over the weekend. He was finished reading it in less than an hour and thanked me for letting him be the first to read it. 🙂

The highlight of my fifth grade reading class is listening to kids talk about the books they are reading. These book talks encourage their classmates to read their books. If I could add this amazing and generous collection to my classroom library, my fifth graders would be over the moon about these titles!

Having a diverse and current, classroom library creates a climate where all kids can find a book to fall into. Committing to reading a book can be daunting for some students, so the more options I can flood them with, the better. @kellyKRCcarter

Thank you so much for all you do for teachers and students (and librarians too)! I love holding book tastings to get my 71 fifth graders excited to read. They get to “speed date” with our new books to get acquainted with them. All of my kids love this and it has increased the book love in my room!

First of all, thank you so much for this amazing giveaway! As a middle school teacher, I notice that many kids that come to me have lost their love for reading. It has become a job instead of a joy for them. This is why I find choice so powerful. The more books I have available for them to choose from, the more excited they are about reading!

I remind my students to be kind each day. Not only through words but also through deeds. One major way I do this is through books. When my students travel through the stories, they learn so much about people and places, even the fictional ones.
Books are our kindness golden ticket to travel the world.
They already think I own all the books in the world so this gives me the chance to bring them to new places and meet new characters. We can take more trips without leaving our classroom!

Books are a common language for people no matter their age or background. I love giving my students a familiar space to talk in, and often the pages of a book club book are that space! I’d love to give them more diverse books!

When teachers show their love of reading, and when they model their reading to students, it works to build the love of reading in students. We need to show and encourage the love of reading for pleasure in schools. We have signs that say “ask me what I’m reading” and “my current book is ____” that hang around the building. @pgervia

I’m a new middle school reading specialist. This year I implemented 10 minutes of daily free choice independent reading and my students’ interest in books and willingness to read has skyrocketed. Students are actively looking for new books to read and these titles would greatly enhance my classroom library, and most importantly, enhance my students’ reading lives. Oh my goodness!! What a BEAUTIFUL list!!! I’m a school librarian and it really is part of who I am, not just a job. Yesterday I introduced a student who is going through some awful stuff at home to the Stick Dog books. Currently reading a book with a 6th grade of girls and I have them sticky note tabs so they could annotate the book with marking in it. Received an email from a parent last night that said— We were riding home from school today and Hope said “Mrs. Justice is so awesome. She has the best “stuff” (pulling out the accordion sticky notes)….and the coolest voice.”

We do a book tasting every year at school to help get a variety of books in front of kids! So many of them walk away with a list of books they can’t wait to get their hands on! Adding these books to that event would be amazing! So many wonderful authors in this collection!!

Wow. I’m in awe of this giveaway! What a lineup of books! My mission as a teacher is to provide as many diverse books as I can so that my students can see themselves in books and fall in love with reading. This requires a lot of my own money buying books and a lot of my time reading them before putting them on my shelves so I can truly connect with my kids. I also started a lunchtime book club this year!! This mission is hands down the best decision I have made as a teacher. I decided to take this passion a step further so I can impact kids not just in my class, but throughout our district as well. I’m helping coordinate a book drive for teachers in my district so that this spring they can “shop” for new and gently used books (for free) to build their classroom libraries to impact students. I would love to have these books available for our students district-wide! You are a blessing to teachers, librarians, and, most of all, children who are blossoming as readers. I have been able to help turn those kids who “hate reading” into kids who jokingly bow to me in praise when it’s read aloud time or silent reading time because they have fallen in love with reading a good book…or they ask for book recommendations because they know I know them and what they like…or they have started begging their parents to bring them to their public library to get books now! This would be incredible to win for my classroom. I am a first year teacher And I know my students would LOVE some fresh new reads! We read Chris Colfer’s The Land of Stories: The Wishing Spell as a novel study in December, and coming back from Christmas break, I learned that at least 5 of my students asked for and received the rest of the series as a gift so they could continue reading on their own!

I teach 5th grade in an open concept school. One of the reasons I moved schools was so my students wouldn’t have to do AR and they could just read to enjoy. I love being able to go to the library and talk about the different book there with students. This would be a book lovers dream.

They’re so many books in this giveaway but A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park has been life changing for my students. We used this book for our school wide read. Our students love diverse text in which they can learn about another culture.

I am floored by the number of beautiful books in this giveaway! I am an elementary librarian at a Title I School, and nothing makes our students happier than when we get in brand-new books. We put them on a cart in the middle of the library, and they are practically knocking each other over to get to them. I think what I have found out most from twitter is that the love of reading and the love of having real paper print books is still a huge power in our world. Tech has not destroyed it and many are using tech for good to spread this book Joy and reading love to as many People as possible. I also am overwhelmed how authors and illustrators are so loving and willing to give books, time, art and so much more to the people of the world. I am grateful for those that take the risk to write, illustrate, great and share. Their stories make this world a most beautiful place. Thank you for sharing your stories!

Thank you so much for supporting teachers, inspiring student readers, and making the world a whole lot brighter. I literally started drooling as I scrolled through this list. So many books that are on my wishlist right now, others that I’m trying to build up book groups of and some of my favorites that I already own as well. I am on an eternal quest to get books into the hands of readers, so if I am lucky enough to win, I vow to share half of them with my teaching partner and my other teacher friends in order to spread the book love. I will also be able to take books off my wishlist, so I’ll buy an equal number of books off of other teacher’s wishlists (I think at least 10 are on my list currently). 🙂 I am spreading the word on Twitter too. I love this show of support! I have worked this year to create my own classroom library as another place for all students in our school (about 1,000 K-5 kiddos) to check out books from me. Comment about teaching/reading: I just recently made a display of books by black authors, with black characters, and/or about the historical black experience in honor of BHM and WeNeedDiverseBooks. The reaction from children has been AMAZING! I know we all know how important it is for our kids to see themselves represented in books but a 13-year-old squealing, “These are all about black people? I want to check these out!” is just magic!

One of my favorite stories about a kid and books happened last week. Apparently I hadn’t deliberately shown one of our kindergarten students where the Spanish books in our library were. After trying to locate a book with a cat and a cookie, I walked the student over to that section to see if we could find other books. Prior to this I showed the student if you give a mouse a cookie and he said “not a cat! A MOUSE!” When he saw that we had if you give a mouse a cookie in both spanish and english he hurriedly went and got both and then came back to me and said. I will read this one con mi papa, and this con mi primo. He was so excited he then went into the hallway and told the teacher LOOK BOOKS IN SPANISH!

As a reading teacher in an elementary school, I strive to provide both teachers and students with books that provide both windows and mirrors for our school population. Connecting students with books they love is the heart of my reading instruction. By fifth grade, I already have students who say “I hate reading”. I take this as a challenge to find at least one book that they will not hate! Three reluctant boy readers found Scar Island by Dan Gemeinhart this year and now they are ready for more of his books. That’s what it’s all about!

What an incredible selection of books that will find the hands of lucky students of all ages, genders, backgrounds, and interests. Reading is the key to the world and understanding not only the book, but other subjects and adventures. My favorite moments in school are when a reluctant reader comes to me with a smile and a book and tell me she found a good one!

It is TRULY a BLESSING to share my love of reading with my students. This is my first year to serve middle schoolers and I am learning firsthand how difficult it is to encourage them to read. Recently, after SSR time, one of my students shared Fish In A Tree with me, and I could tell she was HOOKED! 🙂

I teach in a rural community where most of my kids are on free and reduced lunches. I have been fortunate to share the world with them through books since that is the only way many of them would be able to experience it, and this would be so helpful!!

I had one student in particular last year who really had a strong voice as an author. She would talk about the characters she created as if they were living people. We had similar tastes in books and music, and I was able to develop a nice relationship with her. At the end of the year, we wrote realistic fiction stories, and when she turned hers in, it didn’t have an ending. But, she wrote me a postscript, saying that while she wasn’t able to finish the story in time to meet our class deadline, she wanted me to know what happened to her characters in the end. On the last day of school, I awarded her a certificate for creativity in her writing, saying that I was confident that we would be seeing her name on the shelves at Barnes and Noble in the future. I think this is what can happen when students have strong authors and stories as mentors: they are able to see themselves as authors too!

In our classroom, it’s my hope that all students find books that reflect who they are, and also provide an opportunity to learn about those who are different in some way. This diverse book list includes books that I know would make a tremendous difference in allowing students to see that there are people out there who are both similar and different to themselves– so important in middle school, when life can get tough! Mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors…so many of my students have thanked me year after year because they have found a love of reading not because of me, but because of the books they are exposed to. Introducing a books as a window only to find out (sometimes heartbreaking) that it’s actually a mirror to a student. But it gives them hope. It gives them an outlet, it gives them something that says, “I can connect with that.” When a student can turn a window into a sliding glass door, it’s a good day.

I enjoy giving my students books at various points in the year. For Valentines Day, I had an array of picture books out and had each child choose the book they wanted. It is amazing when I tell them they can keep it forever and ever how excited they get. I try to write a note inside but usually ask them if I they want me to sign it. The answer is always YES! I write in cursive and they love the “fancy” writing.

Oh wow! I am in complete awe! This collection of books is absolutely amazing. My students would tell you that I have a “book problem”. I love books & I enjoy sharing new books with them whenever I can. We have have two whole class read alouds a day. One is while they are eating snack. That is when I share a picture book. The other is at the end of the day when they are packing up, I read from a chapter book. Almost daily, I have students lined up, begging to be a guest reader during our end of the day read aloud. They so love to share in this experience.

You guys (authors and illustrators) are truly amazing! I am so excited after reading through the list of books, the great titles and beautiful cover art! I shared a book Written by a young man with autism today with my principal to help her, and hopefully other teachers gain some insight into some of our students daily struggles and their lives really. She was so excited about it and had me send her the title and author so she could not only read it, but share it with others. Talk about validation and feeling like what you’re passionate about is appreciated by others! Someone is going to be so excited to get this stack of books into their classroom! A group of our toughest boys have started coming to see me every single morning to get the “mom hug.” They hold on tight, are slow to let go, and a few days ago, our absolute toughest kid told me he loved me in the middle of his hug. It makes me tear up to think about. Took three years, but I think they know I’m in their corner. And sometimes they even leave with books 😉

Thank you for such a generous opportunity! I am a teacher/librarian for a small Catholic school, preschool through 8th grade. This giveaway is truly life-changing! Wow! Thank you so much for this amazing opportunity! This is my 21st year teaching high school English, Spanish, and ESL in a Title 1 district in MI. Because we do not have a traditional school library with books and resources, I have made it my personal mission to make sure my students do not suffer academically, as a result. It is so important that all kids are given the opportunity to become readers, while learning about themselves in the process. By exposing my students to current, relevant, and diverse titles in a variety of genres, it is my hope that they are able to gain insight and knowledge of our world and begin to understand their significant roles in it. Books spark the imagination and support creativity, but most importantly, they let kids know they are not alone. They provide a safe place to make new friends, explore curiosities, adventure to new lands, and discover unlimited possibilities. These books would not just help me expand my classroom library. They would contribute to my students’ individual, ongoing journeys of self-discovery, advancement, and growth, while helping them develop a true love for reading.
I also want to thank you for your kind words of appreciation and acknowledgement toward teachers. You warmed my heart and made me smile. One of the most important tasks we have as teachers is to find books for every child to love. Some are born as book lovers and can’t keep their noses out of a book. Others are a bit reluctant and those are the ones we need to focus on. If we can find books that they enjoy, we will have given them a gift that will last a lifetime. The books on this list can reach a wide range of learners. There’s something for everyone and my students would love them!! #authorsloveteachers

This lineup is incredible! As a high school teacher at a title 1 school, it’s often difficult to get kids to read. As a teacher of 23 years, regardless of the pressures and political mess that education has become, I love what I do. I get to share books, stories, characters, thoughts, feelings, emotions, life with my kids every single day I spend my own money to ensure my students have a diverse and large, up-to-date classroom library to grow their literacy. I do this willingly. It brings me joy to see their joy and growth. When my kids move into high school and college and beyond I still get to be a part of their lives because they contact me, wherever they are, to share their latest accomplishments and reading journeys. I can only do this because of the amazing authors who give to us their time, their talent, their knowledge, their shared love of literature and life. Thank you, to all authors, for giving me the opportunity to share life with my students through your voices. It is because of you we all have found our voice. Not a day goes by that we, my students and I, aren’t reading. Oh the places we go together as we look in the mirrors and out the windows the books you write create for us.

As a still fairly new (5 years) teacher, I felt that my classroom library was severely lacking. I went to a fantastic training by @TheBougieTeacher and she taught us about the importance of community and it how it takes one to teach kids, but also to help you fill up your library with amazing books! 😁 She helped us create Amazon wish lists that we sent to our families and friends. In 1 week I received more than 30 new, diverse, engaging books! My students are voracious readers and were just as excited as I was! They absolutely love them, and are eager to read more!

Every day as a teacher librarian is pretty darn good, but my best days occur when a middle schooler comes in to tell me she/he loves the book I recommended. My favorite lately has been the 6th grader who was excited to tell me how much he loved Long Way Down. We talked about the ending and he confessed this was the first book he willing finished.

As an elementary librarian, it is always most rewarding to find the perfect book to engage a student and develop their passion for reading. None has been as fulfilling as guiding a severe dyslexic to the audible version of Fish in a Tree for our fourth grade book club. This particular student was so passionate about this book and offered a much deeper insight of the book in our group discussion. It took the power of a book to show this child that he wasn’t “dumb”; but that his brain just works differently. He is now on the third Harry Potter and savoring every word. These powerful books really do change lives. Thank you for this opportunity.

As an instructional coach, my goal is to help all teachers 4th-8th grade to foster a love of reading. Research shows the single best way to improve comprehension is to read more and to read for pleasure texts the students choose. You have created an absolute beautiful list of texts. I am sitting here, near tears, because many of the books on this list have already touched my life and I’ve shared them with students. I’m near tears because my job as the school librarian is not secure next year (likely to be cut), based on declining student enrollment and funding formulas and a district that does not really commit to having certified librarians in our schools. If the position/I’m gone, who will champion the new releases? Who will champion the lesser known titles? Who will choose books that reflect our student population? Who will be in the right place at the right time to hand a book to a kiddo and say “this one is perfect for you”? Who will giggle along with Dog Man and Captain Underpants fans and assure them that they are reading *real* books?
I’m overwhelmed at times at the love and support the author/illustrator community gives to school libraries. Twitter is a reader/librarian paradise in many ways. I love seeing giveaways like this one, and book birthday announcements, and book list shares, and creative tips, and book recs, and so on …. Thank you for making my job so ‘easy’ and incredibly fulfilling — the authors in this amazing list have created doors, windows, and mirrors for my students to see others and themselves and I am eternally grateful for that.
Fish in a Tree was a Battle of the Books book for our 5/6 grades this year and my 5th grade team loved it. It spoke to them each in different ways, which is just one part of its brilliance. I love to read and I share that love with my students even though I am a math teacher. I have my students for a half hour period called Act after lunch where they can work on work or silent read to prepare for the last hours of the school day. I match my middle schoolers with books that fit the things they enjoy but currently I am ready a story to them that will reach all of them in its own way. It’s amazing how much middle schoolers also love to listen to a story being read.

One of my favorite things, as a sixth grade reading teacher, is conferencing with a student and discussing the books they’ve read. It only gets better when they let you recommend a book and they’re excited to read it because you said it was an awesome journey. Last week one of my students shared The Bridge Home was one of her favorite reads so far. We had completed it as part of the Global Read Aloud this past fall. I recommended Amal Unbound after she shared why she liked it. We talked about Amal and she was so excited when she saw the cover. She really wants to read more about India and life there. Again, one of my favorite things is the smile of someone who’s enjoyed a good book. @MrsSchwerman

I’m currently in my 21st year of teaching and I am an advocate for reading and for providing students with choice and accessibility of books. When I was in the 4th grade, it was as if a light had been turned on inside and reading books for pure enjoyment began. I have taken this joy and have turned it into a passion for books. I started using BookSourceClassroom this year. My favorite part of the school day is when students are checking out or returning books. I love the excitement when they find a good book. The best is listening and recording their book reviews into the system. You know when a student has enjoyed the book because they summarize nearly everything that happened. I just sit there laughing to myself. LOL
One of the best book reviews was for the graphic novel All Action Classic #4: The Wizard of Oz. The student who read it is ESL and she had no idea it’s one of THE BEST movies in US history. I found the dvd and will be taking it into school for her, so she can watch a bit of cinematic history and do a book/movie comparison. I think she will LOVE it!

I teach third grade in Olathe, KS. When I moved from kindergarten to third grade I researched what made third grade unique. I found out that third grade is a pivotal point in the reading lives of kids. I make it my goal to not only teach content, but to also create readers. Lately I’ve been bringing whatever I’m reading, whether adult, YA, or MG, to school to show my students! They LOVE it. They always ask for a summary or how I’m liking it. They always want to hold it and flip through it to see how many pages it is. And there’s always those kids that are shocked that I CHOOSE to read in my spare time. I don’t know why I didn’t start doing this sooner!

Recently, I learned that Benton Middle School needed a librarian, not just one, but two librarians. During the interview, I was able to convince the admin to bring me on staff, my commitment to them was to get both libraries (5/6, 7/8) ready to open in Fall 2020. After being there a grand total of 1 1/2 days, a storm reeked damage to several classrooms, and the existing Library. Loads of volunteers showed up the morning after the storm and moved books and resources to the building across the parking lot to the non-existent Library. In. The. Dark. There was no power, flooding, rain, it was quite the task to save as much as possible. The community pulled together and they hadn’t even met me yet…it was beautiful. That following Monday, school was canceled in order to find places for the displaced teachers who had lost every single thing in their classrooms, give educators a chance to take a breath, help fellow educators, and get those students back in school on Tuesday. The Libraries remain almost lifeless because of the movement of the books, the lack of books on the damaged campus, and the reorganizing of the current campus, but excitement lingers on the sidelines of what is to be…TWO new Libraries waiting to re-Open! This year my 7th grade ELA students reading lives have completely changed due to the exposure of diverse books and me adding 10 minutes of independent reading everyday to my classes. As part of our English curriculum, students read, independently, at the beginning of every class. Our circulation has greatly increased but our budget has not. Would ❤️ The opportunity to offer these titles to my kiddos. Amazing!! I am the librarian at a small elementary school in central MA. Am so looking forward to reading Lauren Wolk’s Echo Mountain. I met her and had lunch with her at an Author Institute at WSU a couple years ago. Such an incredible experience that I have since met quite a few other authors at An Unlikely Story in Plainville, including Lynda, Katherine Applegate, Rob Buyea and more. My 4th/5th graders skyped with Tamara Bundy in the fall. They loved both of her books. Highly recommend them as a read aloud – a lot of great discussions. Every school year I make a goal to make sure each and every one of my students develops a love of reading. I teach them that books should be mirrors and windows. Mirrors so they can see themselves in a story and windows so they can learn about others. I encourage them to read a number of diverse books. I love giving them all the representation too! It begins with me reading a book a day and having First Chapter Friday to get them pumped about reading! @_vanes_f

This is such an incredible gift to give teachers. My students and I would be over the moon and I would love to share these books with my colleagues as well!
Wether I’m reading to my class or their reading individually, I always make it a point to talk to my students about what they are reading and am always making suggestions of what to read. Growing up, reading was a challenge for me. I never thought reading was enjoyable. Now as a teacher, I make it my goal to inspire reading in my students and help them discover those stories that can take them to different places. My favorite thing is when I catch a student laughing or gasping while they are reading.

I have been a teacher for twenty years and now I am a librarian. There is nothing more important than getting kids excited about reading. I recently moved from elementary to middle school. I have found that books are the key to building relationships with these kids. They love to y’all about books they relate to. Many of the books on this list are the ones my kids want to talk about. Authors are saving my students. Without the books, we might not have the important conversations that help them grow. Thank you!

This is an amazing giveaway and I would be honored to receive any of these books. I have started an at-home book club with my fifth graders. My one goal as an educator is to lead students toward books they’ll fall in love with. Now that we teach using the workshop model, my students have SO much time each day to read. I am constantly adding to my shelves to keep up with the demands of my readers. Knowing that they are free to choose what they read unlocks so much potential. Thanks for this opportunity! My school district serves children from more than 60 countries and children in my classes are often united by the characters and stories we read. I regularly attend weekend library sales to purchase quality books for my students, and they come running in on Monday mornings to see what I got.
Two weeks ago I read One for the Murphys and told them that I cried (full-on tears). I then bought eight copies and they’ve been on constant rotation since. Eighth grade boys are sharing the parts of the story where they cried – no embarrassment, just connecting with the story and realize they can let their guard down, too. It’s a beautiful experience to witness young people falling in love with reading. Many of my former students (inc. ex reluctant readers) send book recommendations from high school!

I work in an inner city middle school by the border. Many of my students cross over from Mexico on a daily basis because they live there. It is cheaper. Most of my students are bilingual, English/Spanish. So, I always try to provide my books in two languages. Throughout the year I collect new books to give away to my students during parent/teacher conferences. I sit outside of the library with my table of books and giveaway as many as I can. This year, some high schoolers came by and asked if they could have one. Even though they were no longer my students, who am I to deny a reader. They each took 3! @Guillen_library

What an amazing collection of books! I am an elementary teacher turned into a certified school librarian. I am in the process of “beefing up” our collection of diverse books…as well as books to support our SEL curriculum. These books would be a fantastic addition to our collection. I want all kids to be able to see themselves in our library, and I want them to learn about others. One of my favorite stories related to this is when I put a copy of a book with 2 moms in the hands of one of our students with 2 moms. This is such an amazing selection of books. I teach 3rd grade in an inner city school in Virginia. My biggest challenge this year has been keeping up with my enthusiastic readers. They absolutely love to read. I catch them reading during math, content and even indoor recess, when they have the option to go on chrome books. Because of their enthusiasm for books, I want to provide them with books that challenge them to look beyond the words on the pages and actually apply what they are reading to their own lives, find connections and make connections. This generous donation would be a dream come true.

There’s nothing I love more than sharing my love for books and reading with my K-6 students. ::BookShivers:: The good kind :). This list is exceptional in terms of creating a library in my classroom – and honestly – sharing out with the school community in our library. Newton’s Little Lending Library could totally use these. My story comes from Valentine’s Day. I gave every student a book. Hoping to encourage some reading over February Break. Every student shared gratitude and joy and genuine excitement about going home and reading. My entire heart melted. I arrived home late Friday afternoon and opened my Valentine Robot…and found two hand made cards. I just…I cried. I mean, I’m a crier…to be sure, but I made a big song and dance earlier this week about the thoughtfulness of some costs nothing. Just a piece of paper. And some super kind words. And my two cards – were full of them. I’m spending my break trying to pay the love forward to everyone we meet. #AuthorsLoveTeachers #JoyinLearning

I absolutely love seeing anyone with a book in their hands. Anytime my math students finish early, I love to send them to the class library to pick a book and get some reading time. I work in a Title 1 school in Hamilton County Tennessee. I was the Secretary at this school for 13 years. I left for 2 years when my dad got sick and eventually died. A position as a reading interventionist came open in December and I jumped at the opportunity to go back to a school that I loved! I love working directly with the students and pouring into them. I have loved reading since I was a child. I appreciate the chance to develop a new generation of readers.
Our district gives shout outs about books every week and “Shouting at the Rain” was the selected book a few weeks ago. I went on Amazon and purchased it right away. I just finished on Friday! Literacy, or the lack of literacy, has been a hot topic recently. Everyone has thoughts, theories, and products, some backed by research, some not. I’ve been thinking a lot about this, in particular how I became a reader. I wasn’t surrounded by books at home, but my mom took me to the library where I was free to explore. Of course, there were many other factors, but it was the freedom to choose and the absence of parameters that allowed me to love books. I wish the educational researchers and policy makers of today would just take a moment to reflect on how they became readers. Maybe just giving kids time and access to lots and lots of text might just put a big ol’ dent in this literacy problem.

One of my favorite things to do as a librarian, besides oral reading daily, is turn my students into book addicts! I collaborated with a 3rd grade teacher – her students read Frindle. I talked to the teacher about writing pen pal letters when they finished reading the story. Sure enough, about 3 weeks later I had letters and drawings about the book – currently on display outside my library. I wrote back to each student and am awaiting their letters. Happily, this is going to be “a thing”.

We lose kids in middle school. My goal is always to bring the joy of reading back to middle school students. I created an environment in my library that welcomes reading. I have monthly contests & giveaways for reading. I also read aloud to my students. Kids love being read to and just because they are in middle school, doesn’t mean they don’t want to be read to anymore. My kids love being read to. It’s also important to model reading…have students SEE you read, not just talk about reading. We always focus on elementary kids reading…which of course we should!…but we can’t stop when they leave to middle school and high school. Reading is a LIFELONG skill…not just elementary.

The best part is when a connection is made with another book we already have, or even better, there is a personal connection to a book. I recently took on a new position as a literacy coach with my district and as a result have made it my duty to read as many new books as possible to reccomend to students. This wide collection of books is simply amazing! The genres, themes, characters, etc is exactly what would complete my classroom library for my 5th graders! My goal is to create a classroom library where all my students can see themselves within the pages of the books. My hope is that my reluctant readers to my bookworms can make connections to the books in our classroom and be drawn to the stories because they are inspired and motivated by the stories.
I have a class of 27 students, 6 are ELL students. I have a very diverse class! This set of books would be absolutely perfect. There is such a variety, that I know each student can find the book for him/her.

My project for this year has been to encourage and promote independent reading with my 10th graders. Big teaching win today: after I gave a book talk on a recent YA series I loved, I had at least one student every hour who checked the books out! And I had two students make specific requests for purchases for my classroom library!

This is an amazing collection of books that would greatly enhance our library and would be perfect for our ongoing lunch ‘aloud’ group! Through the creation of this lunch and read aloud opportunity I have been able to reach some seriously reluctant readers, being able to offer them incredible stories has become my passion! They would be so excited to unbox such an astounding collection!

The Japanese word “tsundoku” (“reading pile” – although I would not apply the apparent added meaning of “piles of books that go unread” – to it my way of thinking of it. I READ them!) describes my whole life. I am in love with books and have piles of them at school, at home, in my car – everywhere. I have a digital annotated book log. I screenshot at least 6 books a week. I send book recs to my dear friends and colleagues on a regular basis. My greatest joys as a teacher are reading tons of books to be poised and ready for that student who comes up and asks for a suggestion or being excited after finishing a book at 2 AM and doing a book trailer with students who make a “want list” for who gets to read it next. I love it when a student stops me and says, “You should read ____, Sandi! You would really like it – it’s just your cup-of-tea!” I can’t wait to read the books pictured here that I haven’t read (and intend to read no matter what) and float them out into the world to be grasped by young hands and be pulled into their hearts and minds. Thank you to YOU and all authors/illustrators everywhere who are working to make this world a better place for our kids. So much has changed since I first became a teacher. The job gets harder and harder every year, but it’s the books that are my co-teachers. My kids will often hear me say, “There’s a book for that.” I’m so honored to be teaching during this golden age of kidlit!

So many thoughts about this past week and my future. I think my next step is to start writing. I’ve shelved it far too long. But right now, my thoughts are still focused on the 11 students I worked with in an urban district this week. On Monday when I first handed out The Crossover by Kwame Alexander for us to read as a group, one said, “We’re going to read a book? We don’t get to read books in class anymore because we don’t have fluency.” We read the book. Not everyone wanted to read aloud, some of them lost track of the page we were on, and one of them occasionally put his head down, but some of them argued over who could read next and wanted to read aloud even though they struggled through some words and couldn’t read the fast paced poems as fast as their peers wanted, and when parts were sad, some of them cried, and together we finished The Crossover by Friday. These were some of the comments they wrote when I gave them a feedback form:
Q. What did you find most helpful about what we worked on this week to help you grow as a reader and writer?
A. crossover cause it teaches a lesson to bounce back
A. It make me wanna read more. (the kid who couldn’t sit still and receives ELL services)
Q. What task did you like the most that we did this week AND why?
Q. Finishing a book (wrote the kid with the most attitude who put his head on the desk)

A. I liked the narrative thank you ma’am and the book crossover because in the narrative we got to be creative and the book crossover helped us with the message it sent. (we rewrote Thank you Ma’am from Roger’s perspective)

Kids need to read books. Kids need access to books. Kids need to see themselves as readers. They need to see themselves in books (I picked The Crossover because I knew we could finish it in a week, free verse novels are accessible, and these students live in a city and down the street from The Boys and Girls Club; they play basketball there and at recess). Readers become writers. Reading and writing opens doors to wider opportunities. I stopped at the local library last weekend and bought up all of the middle grade books on the withdrawn sales cart. Perfectly excellent condition books tend to be withdrawn to make more room, especially when they haven’t been checked out in a while or multiple copies exist. One girl took a book home and read it in 2 nights after 7 hour school days with 5 hours of ELA. I had to negotiate who could take home my dogeared personal copies of Ghost, The Crossover, and Rebound, and in the end I reminded them to share the books with each other. The boy who wants to read more took home two books. He and is friend told me they like to take the jackets off the books, but I couldn’t help but think what they really wanted to do was take off the evidence that the book was once a library book. They had tried peeling the library sticker off first. They wanted to make them their own which those books are now. I just hope they all left this week with Kwame Alexander’s words engrained in their minds.

Ugh! I wanted to edit my comment and when I hit enter, it submitted my comment. My comment above is one I just posted to my Facebook page. My Twitter feed (@EducatorWilcox) has a few related tweets as well. This past week was my school’s February vacation. I had applied and received The Sontag Prize in Education from the state of Massachusetts’ Department of Education. Accepting the prize requires educators to “expand their impact by committing to teach in an Acceleration Academy, a week-long academic program designed to accelerate student learning through engaging, standards-aligned lessons. During the Acceleration Academies, each content teacher is paired with a small group of students (10–12) for the entire week, and teachers are given the autonomy to design lessons based on their students’ specific needs. Students who attend an Acceleration Academy receive the equivalent of an extra month of learning in just one week!” I teach in a top performing district, but this vacation week I taught 11 sixth graders in an urban school. It was rewarding, exhausting, classroom management challenging (we had to form community and expectations in a day), and eye opening. What I want most for those kids is for them to find a love for reading. I’m hoping that spark for ignited this week and can continue to be fostered.

Books are gifts that keep on giving! Book access and volume are key in nurturing lifelong readers. This inspiring compilation would truly be a gift! What a wonderful blog post filled with so many excellent books! One of my favorite teacher tasks is reading aloud to children. I love the feeling of helping them to fall in love with a good story & learning to long for more books by a favorite author. My mantra is that everyone is a reader! Some kids just haven’t found the right book yet!
I keep a stash of comic books in my office, and have regulars who come and trade them out or bring friends to find one to read. Nothing makes me happier than seeing students enjoying a good book!

My 34 fifth graders are all engaged readers, primarily because there are so many wonderful MG books and authors out there…so many who are on your wonderful list. My favorite aspect of teaching elementary school is reading aloud to my students, engaging them in stories that are fantastical or grounded in a reality that they would recognize (or both!). There is nothing better than sharing a laugh with the students or bonding with them over a tearful scene in a book. I will never get tired of watching young students’ faces light up when they have made a connection to a book, which is why it’s my mission to help put amazing stories in their hands. This giveaway will help me with this mission, a mission I know that I share with a lot of dedicated people around the world.

Wow! Thank you authors for doing this for the kiddos. That’s what it’a all about. I teach 6th grade ELA in a middle school and my main goal this year is to get my students to have a love of reading. These books would give my classroom a really great face lift and my kiddos would be soooooo excited and definitely grateful. Thank you all!

I read aloud to a wonderful set of 5th graders every year. We laugh together and cry together and most of all create a bond through a love of books. As teachers we have a myriad of curriculums demands, but I refuse to give up reading aloud to students no matter how old they are. Read aloud is our favorite time of the day! And we never ever miss it! Thankful for the opportunity to add books to my read aloud collection! Read to the students!
