~EXTRAORDINARY~
Wow. It’s been a couple of bizarre years, hasn’t it?
For we authors and illustrators, everything came to a stop when Covid came on the scene. No more drives or flights. No more school visits. No more conferences. The whole thing halted. Like a big rambling truck running into thick, springtime mud. So, we pivoted and the author experience shifted out of necessity. We learned about some newfangled thing called Zoom. And became more adept at other digital platforms. We did our best to support teachers by providing content, but…
For teachers that truck didn’t hit springtime mud. That truck came upon a steep incline. With patchy ice. Things didn’t pivot; they tipped upside down and spun around. The truck needed to make a long, arduous trip with very little gas and a bad muffler.
You started your engines and strapped yourselves in. And you rose to the occasion. All the while, worrying about your own safety and the safety of your families. Some of you had children of your own learning online. Oh there was/is so much to navigate. I don’t think the saying, “Some day, we’ll all look back on this and laugh.” applies here.
A giveaway on Twitter, in the grand scheme things, is not a big deal; I realize it’s a small gesture. But the authors here answered my call with enthusiasm. “Of course I’d love to help celebrate teachers!” There’s a lot of love here. Respect and admiration. Good wishes and gratitude.
Those of you who “know my story” know that, as a kid, I had teachers who changed the course of my life. I write to you today because of those people. Education was not just a career to them; it was a calling.
I’ve thought those teachers heroic since I was a sixth grader. In September of that year, I thought I was nothing. I was told I wouldn’t amount to anything and I had begun to buy into it. I’d made all kinds of assumptions about myself and my future. Until my sixth grade teacher, Mr. Christy, took me under his wing and made a point to change my perceptions of who I was and what I could do.
And there were other times, too, when I could have fallen hard; but it was the hands of my teachers who caught me. A science teacher in middle school. Both an algebra teacher and an English teacher in high school. They helped me know what success felt like and made me want more of it. They helped me think long term and find direction. And I write to each of you today because of them.
Those teachers saved me. Never doubt that. The power of a teacher is grand. But the power of a beloved and respected teacher is extraordinary.
And I bet that you are extraordinary.

Our district so far has stayed out of the news in regards to book challenges. But I’m still answering questions from upper admin. I am the lead (and only certified) librarian in a district in Texas where our governor wants to take our retirement if we are found to have “pornography”.

This is incredible. This year has been something beyond description. I had such high hopes for this year thinking it could only get better in comparison to last. However, I’m actually finding this one so much harder. I love my job and my kids so much but it’s a struggle. The world seems off it’s axis and the trickle down effect on our children is real. My goal is to continue to support them anyway that I can and stay hopeful that we will all come out stronger on the other side.

In the middle of the Covid chaos, my school closed its doors and I was placed at another school. It was a stressful time, but I love my new school, grade level, colleagues, and students! Thank you!

Thank you so much, Lynda, and the other authors for organizing this giveaway! It has been such a challenging time to be a school librarian. When our school initially shut down in March of 2020, I recorded daily read aloud of Fish in a Tree and posted them for my students. It kept us connected, and they loved the book! Last year our library was shut down completely, which was so sad. This year I am trying to build back my middle/high library, plus the elementary library which I also now in charge of. It is so much to do and so stressful, but getting books in the hands of the kids is so rewarding. These books would almost all be new titles to our libraries and would be loved by so many students!

As a 6th grade ELA teacher I have tried to use both picture books and novels to help students cope with new feelings, deal with anxiety or simply to travel on a new adventure. Just scrolling down this post and seeing all of these gorgeous books and book covers makes my heart so happy on this Monday morning. Needless to say, it’s been a difficult journey over the past two years for those working in education, but books have provided us with powerful vehicles to faraway places–places we can’t visit during a pandemic–and have brought us so much joy. Most importantly, books give us Rudine Sims Bishop’s “mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors” that are so critical for promoting understanding and empathy–something we need more than ever right now!

This is an amazing and generous give-away! Thank you for orchestrating this. Teaching since the 2019-2020 school year has been hard. The adjective isn’t accurate enough, and yet there’s no better word for it. I know I’m lucky where I am – caring colleagues, a supportive administration, a super who was a teacher in the district – but that luck doesn’t make this job any easier. Add to that any attempt at changing the statue quo to better serve and support students and the uphill climb starts to look Sisyphean. National dialogue paints us as villains, despite people saying they support their local school or their kid’s teacher. Little things like this – regardless of who wins – reminds me the loud voices don’t always represent the majority.

What an incredible gift to educators AND our students. Reading aloud with my students every day was the ONE bright spot of my entire virtual year. We’d start every morning with an hour of reading together – in our PJs. Sleepy – no problem. Still eating breakfast – no problem. Riding to work with your parents – no problem. Camera off – no problem. It was the one thing we could all do successfully and joyfully. For those moments, COVID didn’t exist – we were able to escape into the lives of Aven, Chase snd Simon. We fought alongside Anne, Hiro and Penelope as they tried to escape The Matron. We sympathized with the growing pains of Jude and many students connected to her transition from her home country to America. What a beautiful gift you authors gave to us last year. I truly believe you saved many lives by giving us the ability to escape. Thank you.

What an inspiring story and this giveaway breathes much needed fresh air into the profession. Like many, the struggles and limitations brought on by the pandemic have been real. During the Covid shutdown, I was led to begin my transition from classroom teacher to another position of great influence, Librarian. This school year, I am on a new campus in a new district and finishing my last semester in grad school.

What a great selection of books. I am going to the town library on Saturday to see if they have any of these books. Sadly my school district eliminated the Librarian position in our Schools about 5 years ago. We have no Elementary age books in our current school library. On the plus side, I just received “The Year I Learned to Fly” this past week and it is on my desk to read tomorrow.

I teach 2nd grade at a Title I school in a rural area. There are many hurdles, including low teacher/student morale, high turnovers, sub and support staff shortages, low budgets, etc. The students still make it worth it though! I had a student tell me today that she used to hate school, because she couldn’t read and now she loves it because she finally learned how. Doesn’t that make you wanna get up in the morning?! On my worst days, I try to remember that it might be their best, that every day is another day to spark a love of reading!

While I am so glad to have a full class back in the building full time, rather than juggle some kids in person and others learning virtually, this year has bright some additional challenges. Challenges such as kids learning to be with and work with peers, balancing emotional and social well-being with filling in gaps from the last two years of learning in such a different way. Challenges like teaching the curriculum while children are in and out with illness, possible close contact, or fear of potential illness.
Having said that, planning partner and small group rotations, celebrating classroom achievements and holiday festivities, and just being able to do hands on activities is a HUGE win. I am so grateful.

This year is the year of advocacy. We’ve been running on adrenaline, building the ship as we sailed into the ocean of virtual education, then into hybrid instruction and now back in-person but with nonstop complaints. The attack on intellectual freedom is forcing librarians to step out of the stacks and put their professional and personal lives in the spotlight for all to affirm or attack. It’s tough, scary, exciting, and could change the face of education.

Thank you! What an amazing gift for someone…. Yes it has been a trying couple of years and my job specifically is to put books into the hands of children. The last day before my school closed for lockdown, I was told every student could check out six books. So we organized in about 15 minutes to get those books out to about 400 students. Last year, we created a “BookHub” (like GrubHub) and Our older students ordered books that I delivered to them. They could either choose a genre or they could ask for a specific book. For our younger students, I loaded up a book shelf with lots of picture and non-fiction books and took my computer and scanner and went to each class, every week to check out books. It was exhausting but also wonderful. This year the students can come to the Media Center again. It is so wonderful to see the students and talk books! Thank you!!!

I have seen the pandemic bring out the best and worst in people as stressful situations are apt to do. It feels like I have checked out nearly as many devices as I have books at times. At the end of last year, our school was able to purchase a set of 25 amazing middle grade titles for each of our fourteen fourth and fifth grade classes. We were able to have a book club reading and sharing these books and this year’s Massachusetts Children’s Book Award nominees for professional development, and we LOVED it. Books have saved us. In the early days I made rounds in the neighborhood to my students’ homes dropping off books and picking up the ones they’d finished. We got in breakout rooms and discussed as we read. Almost like normal.

I became a librarian during COVID-19 – one of the most important lessons I’ve learned in my journey was the value of diverse books in a library. I would love to bring these books to my library so that students can find joy in reading. I had to read “When Stars are Scattered” for one of my certification classes and it BLEW ME AWAY. When our school initially closed, I brought home a stack of books and we continued read alouds every day. 1. Your ‘collective gesture’ is wonderful.
2. Yes, we deserve planets named after us, but good books are a VERY close “constellation.” (see what I did there?)
3. COVID has simply been horrible for education of all kinds. The “World Turned Upside Down.”
4. OUR district’s sob story is turning to grade-level centers 2 days** before the year 20-21 year started, after having been closed since March, 2020. (We went from K-6 English/Monolingual to PK-2 dual language). No funding, new population, new staff, inadequate collection and furniture, etc. We ‘opened for business’ officially this January with a strong but incomplete collection of Spanish/Dual/English books that are grade and topic appropriate thanks to grants, donations, and cold-calls.
5. I recognize these accomplishments are good but these kids, KIDS, need more than me/us getting them things. THEY need to have as many “Mr. Christy’s,” “science teachers in middle school,” “algebra teachers and an English teachers in high school,” as they can get.
As one who felt like I needed that and couldn’t see is, I want these kids to know I am there for them.
TO ALL TEACHERS & LIBRARIANS out there: We may not be in the same boat, but we are all in the water. Keep swimming/sailing/surfing/etc. The shore awaits.’

I was first introduced to Fish in a Tree when I became a dyslexia teacher 5 years ago. I teach 1st-5th graders and inspiring them to become readers is my work’s passion. I hear from many of them, “I can’t read. I don’t like to read. Reading is boring.” Teaching during COVID has been challenging and exhausting at times, but my students give ME purpose and inspiration. Sharing your book with older students and just books in general helps them see THEY are readers who read differently. Helping them find the books they enjoy is one of my most favorite things. The 2nd grader who told me books were boring? He read a whole chapter book on a road trip to Florida in 3rd grade! For Valentine’s just this year, a student gifted me a beautiful bookmark, because he knows I love books and now he loves books too! We teachers face many obstacles, but our hearts are true & our strengths are multifaceted. I’m proud to be a public educator.
I’d love to add any of the elementary appropriate books on this list to my library. There are many I want to read just for me! Thank you for this opportunity! My most commonly used phrase, “it takes a village” means we (teachers) cannot do this work without the stories of a lifetime to inspire, educate, and open our minds to others. Hi Lynda, school life continues to be crazy. I teach at an elementary school, grades K-6. Would you believe the students have not checked out a book from the school library all year yet?! I can’t believe how many amazing books there are in this group! I am amazed at how many authors were willing to donate to teachers and are thinking of us. Teachers could use all the support we can get- there’s a lot of feeling like it’s “teachers vs the world” right now. Most days we come home emotionally and physically exhausted and it’s not that “one kid” or parents or principals…it’s just operating at a high adrenaline level all day long. We’re tired and it’s starting to show. I just want to say thank you… you noticed and did something great to show your support!

Last year it was only possible through a bi-weekly drive through. (I had to alphabetize my genrefied classroom library just so I could find the requested books more easily!) Thank you for your books and support of educators! When we had to close for COVID, I started doing Instagram lives every afternoon for students (I’m a middle school librarian). Sometimes I’d read aloud, sometimes I’d simply chat with the kids, but I wanted to create a space that was as close to the library as I could make it. Many of my students considered the library their safe space, but their homes were not. This was especially true of my LGBTQIA+ students. I needed them to know they were still seen. I hope it made a difference. I’m thankful to be back in a physical space again!

Thank you for organizing this giveaway! There are so many books in this giveaway that my students would LOVE, and that I would love to share with them. This school year has been challenging, but one thing that brings my students and I joy is getting lost in a good book!
Additionally, there are so many authors included in this giveaway that are inspiring me as I write and revise my first novel. Teachers love authors, and I hope one day to be included in a group of authors like this!

Wow! Thank you for this opportunity. We have been open for the vast majority of the pandemic. Last year, students were not able to visit the library, so they held books through Destiny and we delivered to their classrooms each day. This year, students are so excited to be back in the library! What an amazing giveaway! I spy so many of my kids’ favorites (or soon-to-be favorites) on this list! The last two years have been a challenge—I Zoomed, visited classrooms, ran contactless curbside book pickups, and spent many hours recording virtual storytimes—and it was all worth it to connect kids with amazing stories, both at school and while they were learning at home. This is an amazing collection of books! Thank you for this opportunity. Although the last couple years have been tough, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It seems like we are moving in the right direction. My students have been amazing throughout all of this…their smiles and energy have gotten me through many days during the pandemic. I love this give away, thank you for organizing it. I really appreciate your comments. It has been a difficult year. Last year was hard but for some reason this year is even more difficult. Students are struggling to deal with their emotions and feelings and I have become not just a teacher but also a counselor, mediator, and referee. It has definitely been draining. There are however, beautiful bright spots when a student comes up to you and tells you how happy they are that you have helped them understand something difficult, or that now they love math because you made it easy for them to understand. Those are the moments that keep me here. @kmclean240

Teaching has always been stressful, but I don’t think it has ever been THIS stressful. 😁 I feel like I’m starting all over again with the new protocols, curriculum changes, increased expectations, and the constant effort to “close the gap” that has emerged as a result of school
closures and absences. We always have to remind ourselves that we are doing the best we can, and that is enough!

Reading. Reading has gotten me to this point. At the beginning of the pandemic, the one thing I missed most was reading to my students. My solution was to read to them virtually, live, every night on Facebook. I read not only to my students and their families, but to friends and family across the country. For some kids, I was reading their bedtime story. For some parents, I was giving them time to watch their child smile while listening to a story. My little cousin, who is autistic, started talking and taking me (his iPad) on tours of his room. Sharing the joy of reading is one of the many parts of teaching I love, because it goes well beyond the classroom. Thank you for this amazing gift! What a blessing! @MsJenniferLutz

I am not sure if you are considering higher ed. institutions in this, but I teach at a small state college in Idaho that is known for its teacher preparation program (I coordinate the elementary and secondary programs, as well as teach Foundational Literacy and Children’s Literature courses… these books would make wonderful additions for my course and classroom library in which we let our preservice teachers check out books to use in classrooms they are conducting clinical experiences and student teaching in). We definitely had to pivot during the pandemic with putting all face-to-face courses online and in hybrid formats, and are in fact still adjusting our teaching this school year as well. My favorite memory was hosting a session for my interns and some were on Zoom and I had to record the session and use breakout rooms and poll people and, and, and! One of my interns asked how I was doing all of that at once (and also said I made it look so easy…I had the honest “I’m stressing up here!” conversation with them), but the next class session I walked them through a Zoom tutorial so they could become more familiar with what they were most likely going to be doing!

I actually really enjoyed it because I had more one-on-one time with kids and got to know the students more than if they visited the library as a whole class. Thank you for this. Especially this year, which actually tops last year in stressfulness! I didn’t know that was possible. But 2020-2021 must’ve bragged a lot, because 2021-2022 said, “Hold my nutritionally dubious juice box!”

Due to Covid we lost our ability to use our library at school and our Amazing librarian moved onto another job. I have been buying books every paycheque to ensure I have a classroom library for my students. I love seeing them with books in their hands and having chats about what they are reading. This list of books is amazing and most of them are on my Amazon wish list! Thank you for the opportunity to win this. Once our library reopens (soon hopefully), I’ll be gifting my school with any duplicates.

I have gotten through the past few years from the help of my wonderful co-workers. We have held each up through these difficult times. Also, I’ve been able to escape reality by reading many of these great books on the list. Thank you authors!

Thank you for hosting this! This is such an amazing giveaway! The last two years have been such an uphill battle, and finally having the library open and letting the kids check out books again has been amazing. My elementary library is definitely in need of an update, so this would be so amazing, and there are so many great books that I have wanted to get that are included here!

Teaching two grade levels virtually last year was one of my greatest career challenges but also one of my greatest accomplishments. The connections I made with those students continues on to this day. We did something no one else has done and I am grateful for that experience. Being back in the classroom this year has its own challenges, but I’m glad to be back with the kids in person.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness! The past two years have been incredibly challenging, in so many ways. But I am so fortunate to work with the most dedicated teachers, librarians, ESPs, staff and principal. We lift each other up every day! But the resilience of our students has been what is keeping all of us going. In the scariest of times and moments of doubt, they turned on their computers or walked in the door ready to share the joy of learning again. Were there days that were emotional roller coasters? Yes indeed. And I am sure there are many more to come. Here’s hoping books like these can help us all keep the joy of learning flowing!

This is such an amazing way to bless teachers! If it wasn’t for love of o it students, it would be sooo much harder. Every time a parent or child tells me that my class got them to fall in love with reading, or that they’ve read more with me than ever before, it is ALL worth it!!!

This is my first year in the school library after 6 years teaching middle school, and while there have been many high points, the challenges facing our profession have definitely brought some darker days. Thank you to all of the contributors for this incredible giveaway in support of educators! My greatest challenge, and most rewarding opportunity, was teaching fifth grade remotely last year. I’m looking forward to teaching fifth grade in person next year and would love to add these books to my classroom library. Thank you for the opportunity! My wife, a 4th-grade teacher at a low-income school, recently got an email from her bargaining committe asking if staff would rather get a raise next year, or keep extra programs and professionals in the building. She was furious for having to choose between her family and her students, and she told them so.
Every year, she puts so much heart and love and emotional weight into her students (as do the other teachers at her school). I’m a high school English teacher in a neighboring district, and it’s crazy that our jobs are “the same” but so, so different. I love her to death and would love to see her staff win these amazing books! But even she doesn’t win, I appreciate this gesture and am always so glad to see a little love for teachers pushed back into the world 🙂

Thank you for this absolutely amazing giveaway! I have been able to implement (with admin support!) a program called “Destress for Success” to combat the excessive stress and anxiety that has become pervasive in our students’ lives over the last couple of years. I have worked so hard to cultivate this program and create a relaxing but accepting environment in my high school librarian. Recently, several students have given me feedback that they think of the library as their safe space and it’s where they like to come when they need a break from schoolwork. Additionally, many students of various ethnic backgrounds have said how much they love that our collection is varied and they can find books that represent their experience and culture. It absolutely warms my heart and tells me I know I’m in the right place, doing the right things. 🙂

This is so nice of you! I am a newer teacher and it has been a struggle to deal with the aftermath of the pandemic in our schools. I started teaching right before covid hit in my first year. To say it was overwhelming and a struggle is an understatement for sure. Thank you for showing your appreciation.
